[RECIPE] Gyudon

Savory, sweet, tender, and juicy, Gyudon has been a classic dish in Japanese cuisine for many years. This beef bowl combines rich flavors with the convenience of a quick 20-minute cook time, making it perfect for a busy weeknight dinner. For a refreshing twist, pair it with pickled red ginger which provides a crisp contrast to the rich beef. 

 

Recipe: 

Serving: 3-4

Time: 20 minutes

 

Ingredients: 

  • 3-4 cups Cooked rice (Rice Options)

  • 1 lb Thin sliced beef chuck

  • ½ pc Onion 

 

Sauce

  • 1 cup Water

  • 1 pack Dashi

  • 3 tbsp Soy sauce

  • 3 tbsp Mirin

  • 2 tbsp Sugar

  • 1 tsp Grated ginger

Toppings

  • Scallion

  • Pickled red ginger 

 

Instructions: 

  1. Cook the Rice to prepare. 

  2. Thinly slice the onion and chop the scallions. Set these aside for later use.

  3. Cut the beef chuck into bite-sized pieces.

  4. In a frying pan, add water and Dashi pack to boil.

  5. Once it starts boil, remove the Dahi pack, then add soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and grated ginger.

  6. Add the thinly sliced onions and beef to the pan. Cover with a lid.

  7. Turn the heat to medium and let the ingredients cook together. Skim off any scum that forms on the surface. After a few minutes, reduce the heat to low and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.

  8. Spoon the cooked rice into a serving bowl. Pour in the sauce over the rice. Layer the simmered beef and onions over the rice.

  9. Top with chopped scallions and a generous amount of pickled red ginger.
